The community has onsite amenities, onsite grocery store, spa, restaurants, beach clubs, gym, etc. You will not be disappointed with your stay. I recommend renting a car at the airport because public transportation such as Uber is hard to come by in Las Catalinas area. If you want more of a relaxing trip and plan to stay mostly in Las Catalinas then you can get away without getting a car but you will still need to coordinate transportation from and to the airport from Las Catalinas.
Las Catalinas does have some options for car rentals if you do need a car for a few hours, a day, or a few days. It is actually priced fairly well and do recommend the service. I ended up renting a car for a full day to go explore a few beaches nearby.

This stir-fried delight, comprised of udon noodles, succulent beef, crisp vegetables, and a tantalizing soy sauce, proved to be one of the most unforgettable dishes I've ever tasted. The Yaki Gyozas, a signature appetizer, unfolded a delightful experience of fried dumplings generously filled with a savory blend of pork, chicken, and vegetables. A sneak peek into the future included a taste of their ceviche, promising an insanely good addition to the menu. Concluding the feast, the Mochi dessert delivered a perfect blend of textures and sweetness, leaving a lasting impression of Tamaki's exceptional fusion cuisine.
In addition to excellent food, Tamaki has delicious, handcrafted cocktails. While I was visiting this time around part of the Beach Club was under renovation, so I was unable to get the whole experience. I visited Las Catalinas when the Beach Club was fully functional and it was such a wonderful experience and just beautiful. The drinks, the food, and the staff were all great. Day visiting different beaches in the area such as Playa Conchal, Playa Minas, and Sugar Beach (for this you can rent a car for the day and do a tour on your own):
Sugar Beach is very close to Las Catalinas in Guanacaste, Cost Rica. As you are leaving Las Catalinas it is down the hill past Sentido Norte Restaurant. Once you pass Sentido Norte you will need to lookout for 3 yellow poles on the right side and that is the entrance to Sugar Beach.
Playa Conchal does not have direct access to it unless you are staying at the W or the Westin but it is a public beach so you can access it. It is just a bit of a walk to get there. Playa Conchal is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area as it has white sand (very small shells) and crystal-clear water so worth the trip. There are 2 entry points, but both will require parking and walking. You can go to Brasilito and park in the grass parking lot and then walk along Brasilito Beach towards Playa Conchal, the walk will be about 20 minutes. You can also access Playa Conchal via Puerto Viejo beach which is very close to Playa Minas but the walk is definitely a little bit further. You will have to go to Puerto Viejo and park there. You will then enter Puerto Viejo and walk along the beach towards Playa Conchal. The other way to get access to Playa Conchal is to get a day pass to the Westin Resort.
Playa Minas is a local beach that not many tourists know about. It was beautiful and different from the others that I have been to in the area. It is somewhat complicated to get there, and you need to get there first thing in the morning if you want to find any parking. The roads leading up to Playa Minas are dirt roads and have a lot of deep potholes so you will definitely want to be driving an SUV. The entry point is super narrow, and people park along one of the sides making it a one way to come into and leave from. So, if a car is coming while another is leaving you will have to juggle on who moves back to give space for the other. When I went to Playa Minas there was some maneuvering that needed to happen because there was a huge hole with tons of water and I was unsure if the car could make it through. Playa Minas does not have any services. There are no bathrooms and nothing around the area so you would need to bring everything that you need. I am including this information because the trip to Playa Minas is not for everyone due to the in and out access and the lack of services.
